Universal Exercise Unit

Universal Exercise Unit at Genesis Pediatric Therapy

Using a system of pulleys and weights, treatments in the Universal
Exercise Unit isolate and strengthen specific muscles necessary to produce functional movement. The UEU allows therapists to facilitate strengthening of weak muscles while preventing compensatory use of other muscles.

What Does The UEU Treat?

Typical diagnoses benefiting from treatments in the UEU include:

  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Developmental Delay
  • Traumatic Brain Injury
  • Autism
  • Spinal Cord Injury
  • Spina Bifida
  • Down Syndrome
  • Stroke

What Are The Treatment Results?

  • Increases strength
  • Increases active and passive range of motion
  • Prevention of joint contractures
  • Improves balance and coordination
  • Promotes motor learning and motor planning
  • Promotes developmental milestones
  • Improves vestibular functioning

How does it work?

Universal Exercise UnitThe UEU uses a belt and bungee cords to provide dynamic assistance to maintain an upright position. It can allow a child or adult to stand without a therapist’s assistance, while allowing freedom of movement and facilitating balance. It is useful for learning to transition between positions, and to acquire the weight-shifts needed for functional movement. The goals of the exercises performed in the UEU are to improve functional skills such as sitting, crawling, and walking. It also helps improve balance, coordination, and sensory-motor integration.

Using the Universal Exercise Unit allows the therapist to provide treatments to a patient they could not perform otherwise. Therapists are able to perform treatments without providing manual support, while in a safe environment, allowing the patient to experience movement more efficiently and independently. Therapists have seen tremendous improvements in gait, balance, and coordination while using the UEU. The unique support system provided by the UEU helps patients receiving therapy to reach their maximum potential.
