Labor and Delivery nurse
"Where else do you get to witness the miracle of life on a daily basis?"
Tell us a little bit about you. What do you enjoy doing during your free time? What are your hobbies?
In my free time I love to garden! I could spend the day in the sun in my garden. I am a runner, and enjoy going on long runs down by the river. I also enjoy reading fiction, non-fiction and science textbooks. I am a dog mom to a golden retriever and always have fun taking her on walks.
How Long have you worked at the BirthCenter?
I have worked at the BirthCenter two years
What is your job/role at the BirthCenter?
I am a Labor and Delivery registered nurse.
Why did you decide to work at the BirthCenter?
I decided to work at the BirthCenter after I did my clinical rotation on this floor. I had never had such a great clinical experience until my rotation on the Birth Center. At most units I went to as a student, I felt uncomfortable and like I was in their way. At Genesis and the BirthCenter, the nurses went out of their way to make the students feel comfortable and would pull us into their patients’ rooms when they had something interesting going on, so we could achieve the most out of our clinical experience. My clinical instructor called me later on and offered me a position on the BirthCenter, and I followed my heart and took it. I have never regretted it since!
Have you and a partner ever delivered at the BirthCenter? If so, tell us what you liked about the experience.
My husband and I were recently married so whenever we do decide that it’s the right time to start a family, we will definitely choose Genesis because I know first-hand the excellent care that is provided to every patient.
Any stories/comments/examples of compassion you wish to share that will assure future parents that their needs will be met?
Although I never had the experience of delivering at Genesis, I advised my sister and sister-in-law to deliver at Genesis. My sister-in-law had unique needs that she was nervous wouldn't be met in a hospital setting. She had considered having a home birth, but after convincing her that Genesis can give her an experience of a home birth but in a safe hospital setting, she decided to give it a shot. She delivered at Genesis and couldn't say enough great things about her experience. She was able to labor with only intermittent monitoring. She was out of the bed and doing different positions during the whole process, and her nurse was helping her and giving her suggestions on new positions. She had the labor and delivery that she had always wanted, and the nurses and midwives at Genesis helped make that possible.
My sister also wanted to walk around and try different positions and wasn't wanting an epidural. When she came in, we had just started using nitrous oxide. Although her labor went very quickly, so she didn't get to try as many positions as had planned, she was thrilled with her experience. She got admitted while sitting on a CUB (Comfortable Upright Birth) Stool. When she started to get extremely uncomfortable, the nurse had the nitrous oxide all set up and ready to go. My sister used it and loved it. It helped her calm down and eased her anxiety so she could stay focused and in control. It was a much different experience than what she previously had with her first baby in a different hospital where she had felt confined to the bed and was pushed to get an epidural. She felt like she was a nuisance to the nurses, and her first experience had made her nervous for this one. She came to Genesis for her second delivery, and now when she talks about her birth experience, she talks about how great it was and how her nurse and her midwife made her feel like she was the only patient they had ever cared for!
