Intended Audience

Nurses, PT, PTA, OT, COTA, Recreation Therapists, Social Workers, Psychologists, SLP, and other interested healthcare professionals

Purpose

Enhance the knowledge base of health care professionals in the treatment of patients with SCI utilizing activity-based interventions and therapeutic strategies to optimize physical function.

Objectives

  1. Characterize patient population, AIS levels, and demographics
  2. Identify five (5) physical and occupational therapy interventions that are utilized in the acute management of Spinal Cord Injuries
  3. List criteria for introduction of activities of daily living and mobility
  4. Explain assessment techniques and treatment strategies for improving respiratory function
  5. Differentiate neuropathic pain from non-neuropathic (musculoskeletal) pain and list two (2) appropriate treatments
  6. Discuss neuromuscular re-education options for facilitation of functional activities
  7. Describe the continuum of care and services available at the Shepherd Center

Faculty

Diane Johnston, MSPT, SCI Program Education Coordinator and Clinical Coordinator, CCCE, at Shepherd Center, Inc., Atlanta, GA.  Shepherd Center is a large catastrophic care facility for spinal cord injury. Diane is also a PRN physical therapist in an acute care setting conducting evaluations, administering treatments, and providing family training for patients with general medical, neurological, and orthopedic issues.

Participants are encouraged to dress in layers for their comfort in the meeting room.

Credits

Nurses will be eligible for 8.1 contact hours from Iowa Board of Nursing Provider #59, Genesis Medical Center, Davenport, IA.

Illinois Social Workders will receive 6.75 hours of credit from BlackHawk College for a $10 fee at registration.

Iowa and Illinois Therapists may be eligible or receive 8.1 hours of credit.

Free Parking is available for everyone in the employee lot to the northeast of the Heart Institute building at 1236 E. Rusholme Street, Davenport, IA 52803. You may also park behind or in the parking ramp in the building complex with the Heart Institute Bldg.
