As health care facilities face shortages of supplies designed to protect their workers from exposure to COVID-19, Quad-Cities area businesses, groups and individuals are demonstrating their caring spirit.
Genesis has received dozens of offers to assist with needs through donations of various items, including personal protective equipment (PPE), N95 masks and hand-sewn surgical masks.
The outpouring of support has been overwhelming, and truly humbling.

Postponement of non-essential surgeries/procedures, effective Wednesday, March 18, 2020
In an effort to conserve equipment and supplies for our health care workers and first responders, all Genesis Health System Hospital entities will be postponing all non-essential surgeries and procedures. Genesis is making this decision in the best interest of patients, staff and the community, in order to concentrate our resources for this extraordinary time. The policy went into effect at the end of business on Wednesday, March 18, 2020.
Consistent with other medical centers across the nation, and according to Surgeon General guidelines, surgeries or procedures will be delayed unless there is a:
- Threat to the patient’s life if surgery or procedure is not performed
- Threat of permanent dysfunction of an extremity or organ system
- Risk of cancer metastasis or progression of staging
- Risk of rapidly worsening to severe symptoms
In order to preserve personal protective equipment (PPE), only individuals who are essential to conducting the surgery or procedure should be in the surgery or procedure suite or other patient care areas where PPE is required.
For a minimum of three weeks, this guideline will be in effect through Friday, April 10. However, Genesis Health System Hospital entities will be re-assessing on a weekly basis for a potential to extend the surgical/procedure guidelines.
