Cardiopulmonary rehabilitation provides patients, families, and communities with important resources in the battle against these diseases. Cardiopulmonary rehabilitation programs are designed to assist patients with heart disease to recover faster, and return to full and productive lives. It is also a fitness program for people who seek personalized exercise and help in managing healthy lifestyle choices. Pulmonary rehabilitation helps those with lung problems to experience less difficulty with breathing, increase muscle strength and endurance and improve quality of life.
Phase I Program
Cardiac Rehabilitation Phase I occurs while a person is hospitalized for a cardiac event or procedure associated with coronary artery disease, valvular disease, or cardiac muscle dysfunction. Staff monitors patients as they gradually progress their activity and exercise performance, early after their event or procedure. The specially trained cardiac rehabilitation staff assist the patient in identifying their cardiovascular disease risk factors and provide education to assist them in making healthy lifestyle choices upon discharge from the hospital
Phase II Program
Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Phase II is the outpatient component of cardiac or pulmonary rehabilitation. During Phase II, emphasis is placed on monitored exercise and continued education specific to your disease process. Through the program's closely monitored activities, participants regain confidence in their exercise capacity and increase their ability to resume day-to-day activities. Genesis' professional staff works with each participant to individualize their exercise program, allowing them to acheive the maximum benefits of exercise.
Through education on heart disease, modifying risk factors and how to safely exercise, the following goals for Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Phase II are achieved.
- Improve the exercise capacity of the patient in preparation for return to work, and/or a physically active lifestyle.
- Assist the patient and family in maintaining a healthy lifestyle through risk factor modification.
- Improve self-confidence through increased exercise capacity.
- Shorten the patient’s recovery period from their cardiac event or lung problem.
- Prepare the patient for long-term commitment to exercise.
- Understand how to use medications appropriately.
- Reduce hospitalizations.
To participate in Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Phase II classes, physicians must refer participants. Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Phase II begins usually begins within one week following discharge from the hospital. Pulmonary Rehabilitation begins upon referral from a pulmonologist. The sessions are 90 minutes in length and meet every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and may last up to 12 weeks.
