7th Annual Genesis Doctors in Recital: A Benefit for Music Therapy and Genesis Hospice
Sunday, October 23, 2016

2 p.m.

First Presbyterian Church, Davenport

The annual Genesis Doctors in Recital features the musical gifts of Quad-City physicians and family members. They contribute their time and considerable talents to provide Music Therapy to Hospice patients in their homes, nursing homes and at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House.

Music and health have a long history together. After World War II, musicians would visit hospitals to play for veterans. The music unleashed emotions in patients that required much more counseling than these musicians were trained to provide. This was the beginning of Music Therapy as a career and the use of music as therapeutic medium.

Genesis Hospice has been providing Music Therapy for patients since 2008, and it has continued to play a significant role in patient and family coping, relaxation, reduction in medication, pain management, legacy projects and overall improvement in quality of life. Genesis Hospice is committed to providing quality, compassionate care to those who find themselves with a life-threatening illness and are seeking care as opposed to a cure. Complementary therapies, such as Music Therapy, are used to help manage symptoms and enhance patients' quality of life.

Family members join in the Music Therapy program by singing along with their loved one, or working with the therapist to capture and record music that can be shared through the generations. Creating a legacy CD helps family members celebrate the life of a loved one as part of the healing process.

Music Therapy is a mission service, one that relies on the generosity of the individuals and foundations for funding. Charitable contributions to the Genesis Health Services Foundation, on behalf of Genesis Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice, provide the only source of funding for Music Therapy. Gifts throughout the year are needed to provide nearly 720 hours of music therapy to grateful patients and families.

The 7th Annual Genesis Foundation Doctors in Recital is set for Sunday, October 23, 2016 at 2 p.m., First Presbyterian Church, 1702 Iowa St., Davenport. Plan to join us!
