U.S. News Puts Genesis, Davenport On Best Regional Hospitals List

Genesis Medical Center, Davenport has landed on U.S. News & World Reports list of “Best Regional Hospitals” for 2011-12.

Each year, U.S. News publishes the Best Hospitals rankings in July. At the midpoint of the 2011-12 year, its editors have now recognized 247 hospitals outside major U.S. metropolitan areas as Best Regional Hospitals. The list of those hospitals, including Genesis, is available online at www.usnews.com/bestregionalhospitals.

All Best Regional Hospitals, regardless of location, had to meet the same standard: They were recognized last July as highperforming in at least one of the 16 specialties that U.S. News evaluates.

Genesis Medical Center, Davenport was recognized as “highperforming” in five specialties: gastroenterology, gynecology, geriatrics, nephrology and orthopedics.

Hospitals like Genesis Medical Center, Davenport offer a high level of medical care to communities that otherwise might have limited options, says Avery Comarow, U.S. News Health Rankings editor.

“All Best Regional Hospitals are what we call ‘high-performers’ in at least one medical specialty,” Comarow says. “They are fully capable of providing first-rate care, even to most patients who have serious conditions or need demanding procedures.”

U.S. News annually evaluates nearly 5,000 hospitals in 16 different medical specialties. Hard numbers stand behind its analysis in most specialties -- death rates, patient safety, procedure volume, and other objective data.

Also factored in are responses from physician specialists, who are asked to name hospitals they consider best in their specialty for the toughest cases.

“Recognition from U.S. News is highly sought after by hospitals and health systems across the country,’’ said Doug Cropper, President and CEO, Genesis Health System.

“The recognition by an independent and credible source is affirmation that our system-wide focus on quality of care, patient safety and excellent patient outcomes is on the right track.

“The important message from recognition like this to our patients is that they can expect a high level of care and outstanding outcomes at Genesis.”
