Genesis Centralizes Health Care And Wellness At Genesis Medical Park, Moline
On a remediated property that was once a family farm and a landfill, Genesis Health System broke ground Dec. 6 on a modern health care office building and wellness park that will be the first of its kind in the region.
Genesis replanted a 20-foot spruce tree moved from Genesis Medical Center, Davenport to celebrate the event and highlight environmentally friendly features that will be integrated into the property and the office building.
Genesis Medical Park, Moline will improve access to physicians and health care services at a centralized location for residents of Moline, Rock Island and surrounding communities. The initial development of Genesis Medical Park, Moline will consist of a medical office building of approximately 52,000 square feet.
Genesis Medical Park, Moline will transform a brownfield once covered with residential and industrial waste into a remediated site with public green spaces.
"It has been a long process, with starts and stops along the way, but we now have a development plan that will positively impact the health and wellness of the region,'' said Florence Spyrow, Senior Vice president, Genesis Health System. "It's an exciting day because not only are we hosting a ceremonial ground breaking, we're truly breaking ground and starting construction very quickly.
"When it is completed, Genesis Medical Park, Moline will provide for the health care needs of thousands in the communities Genesis serves, but we're planning much more. There will be green spaces, walking trails and a gazebo for the public. We'll not only be providing health care, but wellness.
"We will also be integrating a number of green features into the site and the building plans. We've taken a property that was blighted and was an
environmental hazard and turned it back into a useful, beautiful site that will serve the public for decades to come.''
Genesis acquired the property in 1998 from the Ferry family, which farmed the property for crops and livestock beginning in the 1880s. From 1946-1960, the site remained the property of the Ferry family, but served as a dump for Moline residents and the City of Moline.
Genesis worked with the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and an integrated team of scientists, engineers and field experts to remediate the land. The Illinois EPA approved remedial actions in July 1999, clearing the way for redevelopment.
Genesis Medical Park, Moline will be a joint venture of Genesis Health System and Frauenshuh HealthCare Real Estate Solutions of Minneapolis, Minn. Frauenshuh acquires, develops, finances and manages medical office buildings, and multi-specialty clinics on a national level.
The office building of Genesis Medical Park, Moline will house the offices of 16 primary care physicians and specialists, Genesis Convenient Care, Genesis Integrative Wellness and ancillary services, including lab, pharmacy, radiology and home medical equipment.
Genesis Health System President and CEO Doug Cropper said the medical park is needed to serve the changing needs of patients. There will also be additional need for health care in the region as health care reforms are fully implemented.
"Genesis is committed to serving the Illinois community and improving the health of this community,'' Cropper said. "As we evaluated the Genesis mission and our strategies for achieving this goal, we have determined that we need both a greater presence and a more centrally located presence for outpatient services.
"This site will deliver the convenient, high quality and cost-effective care the community desires.''
Expected opening of the medical park is late 2013 or 2014.
