Hospital Renovation Brings Jobs to the Area
An $11,700,000 renovation of Mercer County Hospital is scheduled to begin in February, 2013. Elements of the renovation include upgrading the infrastructure, enhancing medical technology and expanding outpatient services to meet required safety standards and patient expectations. Most importantly, these improvements will ensure the hospital will continue to serve the long-term health and wellness needs of our community.
The renovation will also benefit the economic vitality of the community through the retention of 149 employees as well as the addition of over 100 new construction jobs. The renovation is scheduled to take 18 months to complete and will have an economic impact of over $25,000,000 to local communities through the addition of jobs and the capital expenditures with the building project.
The aggressive $11,700,000 project will be completed in three phases and will allow all services to continue operations during renovation. A significant component of the renovation is to replace the HVAC throughout the entire building. The first phase will include establishing a new entrance and centralized patient registration area, located at the front of the hospital. All patient rooms will be updated during this phase, which is expected to be completed in seven months.
In the second phase, Radiology and Surgery will be renovated and expanded to accommodate growth and advancement in medical technology. The existing operating room will be remodeled including a new surgical suite, recovery room, sterile storage area, and scrub room. This phase is expected to be completed in five months.
The last phase will be completed in six months and includes the renovation and expansion of the Emergency Room, Laboratory and Physical Therapy Departments.
A Pre-Bid conference was held on November 27th at the VFW, Aledo to introduce the project to the construction community. All qualified contractors were invited to attend. Contractors interested in the project will submit their bids by December 13th and contracts will be awarded in January 2013.
