Introducing Genesis Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine
With an emphasis on orthopedic excellence
Outdoor windows with towering photos of athletes at peak performance offer the first clue that Genesis Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine has a unique focus.
Once inside, the new 10,500- square-foot clinic at 53rd Street and Eastern Avenue in Davenport has many cutting-edge features -- from a first-in-the-region underwater treadmill to expedite recovery to Vertimax technology to help athletes improve speed, reaction time and jump performance.
“The facility offers features unlike any now available in the region for recovery from injury or surgery,” said Doug Boleyn, Genesis outpatient rehabilitation services director. “We also emphasize the recovery of athletes and anyone who has suffered an injury while participating in sports.”
Among the clinic’s most distinctive pieces of technology is the HydroWorx underwater treadmill pool. This helps individuals maximize their recovery potential and return to functional training, such as walking, running and swimming, much earlier in their recovery and with significantly less pain.
By taking advantage of the body’s buoyancy in water, the HydroWorx pool eliminates 20-90 percent of an individual’s body weight. For example, in collarbone-deep water, a 200-pound person will bear only 20 pounds while in the aquatic therapy pool.
Adjustable water temperature allows for muscle relaxation and reduction of joint stiffness with warm temperatures and swelling control with cooler temperatures.
The underwater treadmill also is equipped with video analysis. Swimmers can swim against resistance, and runners can train while having their movements videotaped. Directional jet systems allow for up to 200 different water speeds and can be directed to the exact locations desired.
“Two underwater cameras and two flat screen viewing monitors greatly enhance therapists’ diagnostic capabilities, such as when they’re evaluating a person’s underwater gait pattern,” said clinic supervisor and physical therapist Kathryn Ellsworth. “An athlete or patient has the ability to watch and adjust their underwater movements to ensure proper form and safety.”
The clinic’s high ceiling accommodates an indoor regulation-height basketball hoop, an indoor pitching mound, a golf net and volleyball net, and helps to meet the rehabilitation, returnto- sport and sports performance needs of athletes of all ages.
“People are surprised by the openness of the building, and everyone loves all the windows and natural lighting,” Ellsworth said. “With our space and ceiling height, we have the ability to simulate many sports activities, whether it’s volleyball and golf or baseball, basketball and football.
“Our therapists can watch the athletes in motion and determine specifically what is aggravating their condition and make sure they are prepared to return to competition after injury.”
The facility also offers sports-specific training, running lanes and a Chill Zone lounge for cool-downs after workouts. In addition, it’s the only Quad Cities therapy clinic to offer Vertimax technology, which uses a system of pulleys attached to a platform to provide resistance. This helps improve speed, jump performance and provides concentric and eccentric strengthening.
Orthopedic and joint problems
While sports medicine sets it apart, the clinic’s focus is on orthopedic excellence and is appropriate for anyone with a muscle, bone or joint problem, Ellsworth stressed.
The Genesis Rehabilitation staff continues to provide one-on-one individualized care for both acute and chronic pain. Services include treatment for muscle, bone and joint pain, return-to-work training, pre- and post-operative recovery, balance/dizziness dysfunctions and TMJ/headache pain. A certified hand specialist can help restore maximal upper extremity function, regardless of the degree of the injury.
