Genesis Health System "Breaks Ground" on $138.5 Million Construction and Modernization Project
Genesis Health System officials were joined today by Davenport Mayor Bill Gluba at a "groundbreaking" ceremony to celebrate the launch of a $138.5 million construction and renovation project at the East Rusholme Street campus of Genesis Medical Center, Davenport. The project is one of the largest single financial investments in the history of the Quad Cities.
Doug Cropper, president and CEO of Genesis Health System, said the 203,000 square feet of new construction and 115,000 square feet of renovation will position Genesis for technological advances and the changing needs and expectations of patients.
"The new facility we celebrate today will increase efficiency dramatically and more than pay for itself over time. But more importantly, it will serve our patients well going forward by enabling Genesis to improve clinical outcomes and patient safety with a state-of-the art facility that will accommodate the newest technology and latest innovation," Mr. Cropper said.
Mr. Cropper explained the twelve new operating suites that will be located in a new seven-story tower are important for several reasons. First, they will accommodate more sophisticated equipment that will enable more advanced procedures and allow "our Quad City neighbors to get all the care they need here, close to home, family and the support they need to expedite recovery. And, second, these new operating suites also will help Genesis attract new surgeons and other care providers to the area, who want to practice in a setting designed to showcase their healing talents."
According to Mr. Cropper, another significant community benefit made possible by this construction will be an expanded trauma center. Today Genesis Medical Center, Davenport is the busiest emergency center in the State of Iowa, treating nearly 75,000 patients a year. Mr. Cropper reported that this expansion and modernization will allow for even faster service times, already among the fastest in the nation.
In addition to the twelve operating suites, the new seven-story tower also will contain three new floors dedicated to in-patient care, a total of 64 beds now and additional space for 32 more beds in the future. The goal is to create a highly efficient focal point for all short-term acute care on the GMC – Davenport East Rusholme Street campus while creating expanded space on the West Central Park campus for longer-term acute care patient care.
Services remaining at Genesis Medical Center, West Central Park, will include inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services; inpatient and outpatient behavioral health; Genesis Cancer Care Institute; Genesis Wound and Hyperbaric Institute; emergency department; sleep disorders; outpatient diagnostic imaging; pharmacy; and, offices and services in the two existing medical office pavilions.
Estes-Dunn, a joint venture, is the construction manager. Flad Architects of Madison, Wis., is the design firm. KJWW Engineering of Rock Island is the engineering firm. Conceptual Designs, Inc., Bettendorf, is assisting with interior design. The project will be an IMPACT project providing jobs for hundreds of local skilled workers the next four years.
"We know the significance of a project of this scale for Genesis and our patients and community, but we also are excited about what the project will mean to the economy of the Quad Cities,’’ said Mr. Cropper. "The benefits of this project will ripple through the economy, creating good jobs and stimulating the economy further as workers employed by this project buy houses, cars and necessary goods from local businesses.’’
