GMC, Davenport A U.S. News Best Hospital

Genesis Medical Center, Davenport is a top-ranked community hospital in Iowa and in the region for the third consecutive year in the 2016-2017 U.S. News Best Hospitals rankings.

The annual U.S. News analysis of hospitals includes data from nearly 5,000 centers across multiple clinical specialties, procedures and conditions.  Scores are based on a variety of patient outcome and care-related factors, such as patient safety and nurse staffing.  Hospitals are ranked nationally in specialties and regionally in states and major metro areas. U.S. News assigns a rating to hospitals in a group of common procedures and conditions.

University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, an academic center, is the top-ranked overall hospital in Iowa. Genesis Medical Center, Davenport and UnityPoint St. Luke’s of Cedar Rapids shared the No. 2 ranking and were the top-ranked Iowa community hospitals.

Genesis Medical Center, Davenport was ranked as “high performing’’ in the clinical specialties of gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery, geriatrics and pulmonary.

Genesis was also ranked as “high performing’’ in five procedures and conditions. Those five are chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD); colon cancer surgery; heart failure; hip replacement; and, knee replacement.

“Recognition from an objective source like U.S. News is highly coveted,’’ said Jordan Voigt, president of Genesis Medical Center, Davenport.  “It takes a dedicated team of physicians, nurses and all staff who touch the lives of our patients to provide nationally recognized care.

“But the real benefit is not to Genesis but to the patients served by Genesis. This recognition considers quality of care, safety of care and excellent patient outcomes. We thank all of our staff, not only in Davenport, but in all areas of Genesis, for their commitment to patients.’’

U.S. News evaluates hospitals in 16 adult specialties.  In most specialties, it ranks the nation’s top 50 hospitals and recognizes other high-performing hospitals such as Genesis that provide care at nearly the level of their nationally ranked peers.

“A hospital that emerges from our analysis as one of the best has much to be proud of,” said Avery Comarow, U.S. News Health Rankings Editor.  “Only about 15 percent of hospitals are recognized for their high performance as among their region’s best. Just 3 percent of all hospitals earn a national ranking in any specialty.”

U.S. News publishes Best Hospitals to help guide patients who need a high level of care because they face particularly difficult surgery, a challenging condition, or added risk because of other health problems or age.  Objective measures and other data largely determined the rankings in most specialties.

Genesis Medical Center, Davenport was also recently recognized as the only 4-star hospital (5-star scale) in the Quad Cities by the and was recognized for the fourth lowest readmission rate in the country following heart attack by Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
