Vera French Foundation, Genesis Behavior Health Present Through My Eyes: A New Way To Look At Mental Illness

The Vera French Foundation will present their annual week of events, “Through My Eyes: A New Way To Look At Mental Illness” February 17-20, 2016.

Genesis Behavioral Health will be the title sponsor for the week that will promote awareness, help remove the stigma associated with mental illness, fundraise for the extremely important programs offered by the Vera French Community Mental Health Center and offer a new way of looking at mental illness.

J.R. Martinez, wounded U.S. Army veteran, actor, best-selling author, motivational speaker, advocate and winner of Dancing with the Stars will present the keynote speech on February 20, 2016 – 7:00 p.m. at the Bettendorf High School Performing Arts Center.

Mr. Martinez will inspire the audience to face adversity with optimism and resiliency and to recognize that every person has worth.  A VIP Meet and Greet Reception for Mr. Martinez will be held following his address at Hotel Blackhawk.

The week will also include motivational speakers Bethany and Karen Yeiser on February 17, 2016 – 7:00 p.m. Bettendorf High School Performing Arts Center.  This unique and in-depth journey through Schizophrenia, Homelessness and Recovery presented by daughter and mother will transport the audience and offer informative accounts that will describe the heavy toll severe mental illness takes on patients and families, and will inspire hope toward the possibility of recovery.

On February 19, 2016 recognized expert, Russell A. Barkley, PH.D., will offer a continuing education workshop on ADHD in children and adults from 8:30 – 4:30 at the Genesis Adler Health Education Center. The course will teach participants three major management approaches and will address issues of developmental transition and varying clinical presentations of the disorder.

“The main objective of the week of events is to make an impact on the stigma and knowledge that people have about mental illness in our community,” stated Lou Ann Goral, Executive Director of the Vera French Foundation.  “It is important to remember that we are all the same, with or without mental illness, we are all working to live our lives the best we can in meaningful and productive ways.  These speakers will inspire all of us to be proud of who we are and challenge us to see the courage it takes to face adversity and hardship with optimism and hope.”
