Genesis Recognized for High Quality in Bariatric Surgery
Wellmark Blue Cross® and Blue Shield® has recognized Genesis with a Blue Distinction® Center+ designation for Bariatric Surgery as part of the Blue Distinction Specialty Care program.
Blue Distinction Centers are nationally-designated health care facilities demonstrating expertise in delivering improved patient safety and better health outcomes, based on objective measures developed with input from the medical community.
Genesis bariatric surgery is available through the Center for Weight Management at Genesis Medical Center, East Rusholme Street. The center helps individuals achieve long-term weight loss through surgical and non-surgical options.
Since first offering bariatric surgery in 2003, Genesis has performed nearly 1,800 surgical procedures to assist patients struggling with obesity.
To receive a Blue Distinction Center+ for Bariatric Surgery designation, a health care facility must demonstrate success in meeting patient safety measures as well as bariatric-specific quality measures, including complication and readmission rate for laparoscopic procedures in sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass, and adjustable gastric band.
A health care facility must also be nationally accredited at both the facility and bariatric program-specific levels and have demonstrated cost-efficiency compared to its peers.
Quality is key: Only those health care facilities that first meet Blue
Distinction’s nationally-established, objective quality measures will be considered for designation as a Blue Distinction Center+.
In 2017, the Blue Distinction Centers for Bariatric Surgery program expanded to include not only the type of service provided but also the site of care. Health care facilities were evaluated as either a comprehensive center or as an ambulatory surgery center.
“Genesis is proud to be recognized by Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield for meeting the rigorous Blue Distinction Center+ quality and cost selection criteria for bariatric surgery set by the Blue Distinction Specialty Care program,” said Kim Higby, BSN, RN, CBN, Clinical Coordinator, Genesis Center for Weight Management. “From the beginning of our program, we’ve focused on quality through a multi-disciplinary approach to weight loss surgery.
“In addition to our skilled surgeons, our team includes a registered dietician, clinical psychologist, pharmacist, an exercise physical therapist and registered nurses.
“This comprehensive approach has resulted in hundreds of patient success stories and our proven track record of safe, nationally-recognized care. Blue Distinction Center+ designation is validation that we’re providing life-changing surgery the right way.”
Genesis is also accredited under the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program, a joint program of the American College of Surgeons and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.
Bariatric surgeries are among the most common elective surgeries in the U.S., which provides significant opportunity to improve quality within the health care system. There were 196,000 bariatric surgeries performed in 2015.
