Genesis and River Bandits Announce $100,000 Donation for Flood Relief
DAVENPORT, Iowa – Aug. 7, 2019 -- Genesis Health System and the Quad-Cities River Bandits together announced today a donation of $100,000 to assist flood relief efforts following the region’s worst flooding ever.
Genesis Health System employees and medical staff donated to the relief effort. Fans who attended River Bandits games in June and July gave generously to the relief effort, as did Minor League Baseball and team owner Dave Heller.
The initial donations are being directed toward two organizations involved in direct relief efforts following the flood.
Humility Homes and Services will receive $33,000; Grow Iowa Fund will receive $27,000. The remaining $40,000 will be allocated soon.
“Many of us experienced a helpless feeling as we watched businesses flood, heard about people who temporarily lost their jobs and watched people be uprooted from their homes. Some of those impacted are Genesis employees. But we were not helpless. We could give. Our Genesis employees and medical staff and our generous community-based partners stepped up to help,’’ said Doug Cropper, president and CEO, Genesis Health System. “Through our joint efforts, we hope we can assist organizations and businesses to get back on their feet.
“We considered organizations directly involved in relief efforts. We sought to help at a grassroots, community-based level. This was a ‘home team’ effort of neighbors helping neighbors. We’re very proud of all efforts to help those impacted.’’
Dave Heller, owner of the Quad-Cities River Bandits, who suffered a significant financial setback because of the flooding, thanked River Bandits fans for responding to the disaster.
“Every time I went out on the field and asked our fans to help, they came through,’’ Heller said. “Thank you to everyone who pitched in. That’s the unsinkable spirit here that makes the Quad Cities such a wonderful and special place. Like many downtown businesses, we were hit very hard by the flood but we all pulled together as a community to accelerate the recovery. We are so proud to again team up with the great folks at Genesis to help make the Quad Cities a better, stronger and healthier place to live, work and raise a family.’’
Genesis and the River Bandits have collaborated and continue to collaborate on several projects benefitting the Quad-Cities, including the Genesis Flu-Free Quad-Cities initiative, Camp Genesis, support of the Genesis Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and the innovative Genesis Family Connects program.
