Genesis Flu-Free Clinic At Modern Woodmen Park

The Genesis Flu-Free Quad Cities “Flu Crew” will be at Modern Woodmen Park on Oct. 7 with free seasonal influenza vaccinations for elementary school children.

Free vaccinations will be available from 3-6 p.m. in the Florian Keen Parking Lot at Modern Woodmen Park. All COVID-19 safety precautions will be taken and students being vaccinated will not have to leave the vehicle.

Each child vaccinated will receive a ticket to an April game of the Quad Cities River Bandits.

This year seasonal flu is arriving at a time when the COVID-19 virus continues to spread, making protection against the flu vitally important.

“We recognize this year there is uncertainty and concerns as we all continue to work through the COVID-19 pandemic. But seasonal influenza is returning,’’ said Michele Cullen, community health manager, Genesis Health System. “There is a potential for serious complications of having seasonal influenza and COVID-19 at the same time or one after the other.

“The precautions being taken to prevent exposure to COVID-19 may help prevent spread of the flu this year. We’re hopeful that will be the case.’’

Cullen said the region has recently experienced an increased number of young people being diagnosed with COVID-19.

“We may not have a vaccine yet for COVID-19, but we do have an effective vaccine against seasonal flu,’’ she said. “A vaccination is the best protection.’’

Genesis has provided free flu vaccinations to nearly 100,000 elementary school students in the region in 13 years of Flu-Free Quad Cities. Each of the students protected against seasonal influenza protects others in contact with them, including vulnerable populations.

This year Genesis is considering several models for the Flu-Free Quad Cities clinics, including the drive-up clinic on Oct. 7 at the parking lot at Modern Woodmen Park.

Major sponsors for this year’s Flu-Free Quad Cities initiative include the Quad Cities River Bandits and Green State Credit Union.

"Today's challenging times make clear that nothing is more important than the good health of our families, our friends and ourselves.," said River Bandits owner Dave Heller. "That's why, for nearly a decade, we have made it our mission to help provide free flu shots to every child in the Quad Cities and why we are so pleased to continue our partnership with Genesis for a Flu Free QC.

“Even though we're not playing baseball this year, we will continue to help fund this valuable program and ensure our community stays healthy and strong."
